A few ideas "off topic"
A centrally placed motif that seems to be calm and balanced indeed, but also boring and static can by oblique structures such as knots, pull the image from one of the corners into the center, gaining power. On the main diagonal of the picture are incredibly important to the composition.
Large areas look more interesting if they are structured in (cereal box ...). Large open spaces are already a counterweight in a small contrasting point.
A little blur in the foreground (stone, bush ...) brings life into the image that is gaining in depth.
Wide Open Space (Note: risk of barrel distortion), with a telephoto compresses the background.
Sometimes it's enough to go with the camera a few steps to the side to get a better view without distracting foreground or background have. Thus, for example, a traffic sign can hide behind a tree trunk.
